Monsanto Company

Monsanto Company's Soda Springs operations are today the producer of the highest quality phosphorus in the United States, and possibly the world. The phosphorus produced in Soda Springs, Idaho meets and exceeds the ultra-high 99.99 percent purity standard required for many high-technology end-products.

Monsanto sells this phosphorus into a wide range of downstream products. Our phosphorus brightens teeth in toothpaste, makes bread rise, and adds the fizzle to soda pop. It is made into a treatment for metal, and hydraulic fluid airplanes, and a pruification for water. In one form it causes a phemomenal growth in plants, while in another form is an effective environmentally-safe herbicide for unwanted weeds. It helps keep hospitals and food services sanitary, and can put out the flames of a raging forest fire.

The raw material from which phosphorus is extracted is phosphate ore. This ore is a finite resource, and environmental regulations to protect natural resources are an ever more important cost of production. While the Soda Springs plant has operated for over 50 years, enough phosphate ore is available to keep the plant operating for 50 more. Fore-sighted investment has allowed Monsanto to operate a state-of-the-art facility which meets and exceeds regulations and permit requirements. Monsanto also has an outstnding program reclaiming mined land that is the envy of the industry, receiving numerous recognition awards from governmental and professional organizations. In fact, throughout its history the company voluntarily conducted joint research with federal land managers to improve reclamation techniques across the industry.

This commitment to meet the environmental and regulatory challenges of a modern natural resource industry, combined with efficient, quality production, savvy business planning, and an unyielding dedication to safety, has helped Monsanto's Soda Springs Plant maintain a very healthy and consistent record for production, cost-efficiency and quality.
