Location &Operation
Located in the rugged mountainous terrain of east-central Idaho, Thompson Creek is a state of the art mining operation. From the first shovel of rock, Thompson Creek was developed within a comprehensive framework of state and federal regulations.
History
Mineral claims were staked in 1967. After 12 years of detailed environmental and economic analysis, a proposed plan of operation was submitted to the appropriate federal agencies. In 1980, the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was prepared by the Challis National Forest and BLM, Salmon District. Construction and pre-production work started after the Plan of Operation was approved, and the mine commenced commercial production in 1983.
Economics & Productivity
A success story for Idaho exports, molybdenum from Thompson Creek Mine is sold around the world to steel and other manufacturers. Thompson Creek Mine is a major contributor to the economy of Idaho. It has a workforce of 326 employees resulting in an annual payroll and benefits totaling $28 million. In addition, the mine spends between $70 and $80 million per year on goods and services. Thompson Creek also plays an important global role. The mine's annual production of 15 to 20 million pounds represents 6% of the world molybdenum supply.
Environmental Excellence
Thompson Creek has an enviable record of environmental excellence and has received numerous awards from state and federal regulatory agencies. Thompson Creek is a model operation in the areas of reclamation, environmental protection and stewardship including a public-private partnership with the Idaho Fish & Game Department to improve the regional steelhead fishery on the Salmon River. Thompson Creek developed the use of a regulatory task force involving all regulating agencies. A practice that has been adopted by many operations since its inception.
Commitment
Like the material it produces, Thompson Creek Mine epitomizes the modern mining operation. Owned and operated by people with long experience in the mining industry, Thompson Creek employees are committed to Idaho, Custer County communities, and most importantly, to the safety and environmental excellence of their facility.
